Personal Photojournalism | Minnesota documentary photographer

Ah, summer. That time of year that Minnesotans fantasize about when we’re pulling on our third sweater just to be somewhat comfortable indoors when it’s absolutely zero degrees.

Summer is here. I always forget how busy it is, even though I keep reminding myself that up until those last two months of the school year, we regularly had nothing on our calendar. The busy-ness has continued, but I can feel it winding down, see that there are longer stretches in between the stuff, and more evenings free again, finally.

Saturday was one such day. Yes, we worked on the house, always working on the house. But we had no place to be. Leisurely breakfast making and reading at the table ensued.

When I woke up I thought I’d see who wanted to come to the Farmer’s Market with me, as it was nearly the end of July and we had yet to hit up a single farmer’s market. Criminal.

Alla and I headed out to Mill City because I knew it has unique crafty vendors that she would like, since she’d never been. She is so happy when she is crafting. She has been making a doll all summer and just this weekend it came to fruition! It is done and has clothes and a name even. She is an amazing 11 year old.

We came home to what we always come home to: Fisher playing baseball. Saturday afternoon was for pitching practice, trading off pitching and catching with his best friend. He is so happy when he is playing.

Summer slips out of your fingers, I always feel it, but there is still so much summer for us! We don’t go back to school until after Labor Day so we have over a month of fun to go. More memories to make and more photos to take!

I encourage you to head around the blog circle, starting with Reading, Pennsylvania documentary photographer Liz DeGroff!

The end of elementary.

mounds view school district photographerI’m pretty sure we just started kindergarten, but also I feel much time has passed since that day. I know half of her school days are behind, but also know there is much to come, that the end of elementary is here, but the beginning of the real stuff is upon us. I am so lucky to have this girl, so glad she lets me take her photograph, so appreciative of the details I see with or without my camera, because of my camera.

To the moms who are ending things this week, Be Well and Celebrate!

If you’re already into your summer water guns and pool days, I posted the kids’ Summer Reading Lists here and here.

This is the best time of the year.

Minnesotans at the pool | April blog circle | personal photojournalism

This month’s blog circle is getting a taste of summer!

We recently spent our spring break in Orlando, and for a Minnesotan, all you need for a successful spring break are a pool and warm weather. We’re pretty easy to please after a northern winter.

little boy swim gogglesSo easy, in fact, that we don’t even care if our goggles are on upside down, just get us in the pool already so we can practice our handstands!

Here’s hoping that vitamin D boost lasts us northerners til the summer days!

Hop around the circle to see what all the fantastic photographers are up to – next up is Overland Park, Kansas photographer Christine Hurla!

Don’t know if I’ve fully embraced the term “tween,” though I’m certain I have one. We are definitely in between. She is in her final year of elementary school, and I imagine the weight of that will hit this spring when there are so many final events. (Either the weight will be all the final elementary emotions, or my head hitting the pillow after the twentieth event in a single week, as spring goes.)

Either way, perhaps “tween” isn’t really in our vocabulary too much because she still seems like the same old Alla. Crafting, knitting, drawing, crocheting, reading Harry Potter, sleeping with all those stuffed friends every night that there’s hardly room for a snuggle!

She’s fun, always has had that smile light up her eyes and your heart.

alla leaves (15)

She’s always coming up with ideas, and always trying to get those ideas to fruition. Determined girl.

And, best part, she’s mine.
